This certificate will introduce students to inclusive design in digital media that complies with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The curriculum focuses on how to write, design and format captions for video, write audio descriptions and alternative text for e-readers, and remediate and format accessible Word and PDF documents. What’s more, students will become familiar with current AODA legislation and industry standards around inclusive, accessible, and universal design in Ontario, Canada, and around the world.
This is a twenty-four hour certificate made up of four courses. Each course is completed in 2-three hour sessions. Class time includes lecture, demonstration, case studies, and digital media lab time. The certificate culminates with an inclusive designed capstone project in the form of a transcribed, captioned and audio-described short video embedded in an accessible PDF document. We will be working with YouTube, PDF, Microsoft Word and a variety of other software.
With this certificate, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of inclusive design and the basic foundation necessary to recognize, understand, appreciate, apply, and advocate for inclusive design in digital media. You can begin to incorporate inclusive design into your work to make it compliant with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) with captioning, transcription and audio-description of video; remediation of Word and PDF documents for online accessibility and provision of alt-text for online image description.
