Profile of Access Innovation Media (Ai-Media)

Purpose:

Tony Abrahams is the Co-founder and CEO of Ai-Media, a for-profit social enterprise operating in the media and EdTech industries – delivering accurate speech-to-text and related analytics and a non-executive director of Northcott Disability Services and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ai-Media is a social enterprise that is focused on making every piece of content accessible to anyone with a disability. Founded in 2003, Ai-Media introduced captioning to the cable and satellite industry in Australia and currently delivers captioning services to major broadcasters in Australia. Their live captioning quality and accuracy rate has exceeded 99.5% for the last few years. Ai-Media is the market leader for captioning in Australia and the UK, and has recently opened offices in the US and Canada. (Ai-Media, 2017).

Developing an Understanding

With research and technology at its core, Ai-Media’s focus is on creating innovative access solutions which address the social, educational and vocational exclusion faced by millions of people with disabilities. Ai-Media is collaborating with leading organisations, institutions and researchers around the world to improve the teaching and learning experience, and access to the ever-growing amount of data to which we are exposed to on a daily basis (Ai-Media, 2017).

The Ai-Media website is home to a blog with facts and information about a wide variety of topics including: the difference between open and closed captions; ways to make video content accessible; tips on editing captions on YouTube and how to caption music and lyrics. Ai-Media’s social media sites focus on accessibility and inclusion. The Facebook page has the largest following of any disability focused site with 400,000+ followers (Ai-Media, 2017).

Supported by the Australian Government, Ai-Media developed their own live captioning Internet platform called Ai-Live, which delivers live captions over the Internet to any web-enabled device.

Using a microphone on the original speaker, the spoken words are sent live to a trained stenocaptioner or “re-speaker”, who uses software that converts speech into text that is sent back over the internet to screens read by the client (Ai-Media, 2017).
