International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

This is more than just a word. It is one of the values that we hold and that we do our best each day on campus to reflect in our choices and actions.

Most recently, we articulated equity in our new strategic plan alongside four other values: courage, innovation, health and wellbeing and sustainability.

By rooting our plan in our values, we have set the expectation that Humber staff and students will uphold and champion these values. We work to translate these values into policies, practices and activities in many ways so that everyone can feel safe and welcome on our campuses.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. As we do each year, we will gather today to recognize the significance of the day and to acknowledge that more work needs to be done to address racism - whether it be subtle, overt or systemic.

Please join us at 12 p.m. in the Ignite Student Centre at North Campus as we also hold a moment of silence to honour the victims and those impacted by the recent terrorist attack in New Zealand and reflect on how it affects us all. The Christchurch shooting is a tragic reminder that all too often fear, hatred and a lack of understanding of those who are different from ourselves can manifest anywhere, and in the most extreme of ways. In the wake of events like these, more than ever, we need to speak out against discrimination and racism in all its forms, including Islamophobia.

We need to be allies to those who experience harassment and discrimination. We need to listen when colleagues, friends and the community at large talk about their lived experience with racism. We need to offer support and act to change things for the better.

The only way forward is together. We are strong when we stand united. We are Humber.
