Humber’s Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management graduate certificate program is designed to build on the knowledge you have acquired in your undergraduate degree. The program provides in-depth, hands-on instruction in the areas of fitness assessment, health and lifestyle counselling, exercise prescription and delivery, health promotion, group exercise leadership, health and fitness management, marketing and entrepreneurship, ergonomic assessment, and functional abilities assessment. Students learn in small groups instructed by expert faculty currently employed in the fitness and health industry.

Our advisory committee provides regular review and input into our curriculum, ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of industry developments.

Please note that certain courses in the program require students to participate in fitness classes that will involve physical activity, which may at times be vigorous. Questions about fitness classes and accomodations may be directed to the program co-ordinator (name and email details located in the Contact Us tab).

Experiential learning is an integral part of this program. The program features three unpaid internship placements. Two take place on campus and the third takes place off campus. During the on-campus internships, students provide fitness assessments and testing, physical activity counselling and prescription services to Humber and partnership employees as part of the Humber Centre for Healthy Living (Humber CHL). Students have the opportunity to run workshops for the Humber CHL and its partners, as well as providing healthy tips and videos for the Humber CHL website. Throughout the on-campus internship, students participate in seminars with their professors and classmates to critically analyze their experiences and develop the skills required for professional work.

The final work placement is a four-week block placement off campus with one of Humber’s industry partners.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

    Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or Human Kinetics including completion of the following courses:
       
      • Human Anatomy
      • Human Physiology
      • Exercise Physiology
      • Biomechanics
      • Statistics/Research Methods
         
    • It is recommended that students also possess at least one semester of the following courses:
       
      • Psychomotor Behaviour or Motor Learning
      • Introduction to Health and Wellness, or Epidemiology of Physical Activity
      • Psychology of Sport, Psychology of Exercise, Sociology of Exercise, or Sociology of Sport

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

Program Requirements

Once accepted into the program, students must demonstrate a personal commitment to physical activity and healthy living, and possess the ability to fully participate in practical-based physical activity courses: resistance training, group exercise classes, cardiovascular training, plyometrics and flexibility training.

Practical courses, which take place in a lab, have a strict attendance policy, which is mandatory for successful completion of the course. Prospective students with special needs or limitations are encouraged to discuss their career goals with the program co-ordinator before applying.

Placement Requirements

The pre-requisite requirements must be fulfilled before the commencement of your first placement. Participation in placements will not be allowed if not all the pre-requisite requirements are met.
