With warmer weather, blooming flowers, and the opening of patio season, it’s clear that winter is behind us. However, we can't forget all that we accomplished during the Winter 2024 term. So, pause your poolside daydreams for a moment and let’s dive into the latest happenings, events and achievements in the Office of the Registrar (RO).
Humber the first to start issuing PALs
On January 22, 2024, the IRCC announced a student cap on study permits divided among Canada’s provinces and territories. International students wishing to study in Canada will now need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) and a letter of acceptance (LOA) to apply for their study permits. Humber was the first college to issue PALs. Since March 28, we have issued over 2,607 pals and we continue to issue more.
Spring Open House on April 6th was a tremendous success, with over 4,500 attendees across all campuses. The Admissions team set up an Application Station, allowing attendees to submit OCAS applications on-site using free vouchers and giving those who had already applied the opportunity to confirm an outstanding offer.
We launched a new initiative at our recent Open House by handing out tote bags to attendees. These stylish and practical tote bags were a hit, with many attendees proudly sporting them throughout the event. The tote bags not only served as a useful accessory but also helped promote the Humber brand and create a sense of community among attendees.
Humber hosts Central Ontario College Dialogues
Ontario College Dialogues is a key annual event that gathers high school guidance counselors from across Ontario to meet college representatives and get information on programs, admissions, financial aid, successful graduate stories, and more. On May 2nd, our student recruitment team hosted the Central Region Colleges Dialogues in the Barret CTI building. Approximately 75 guidance counsellors attended along with representatives from all 24 colleges in Ontario. After the event, attendees had the option to take a general campus tour showcasing our beautiful North Campus.
Themed Contests Help Boost Fall Confirmations
This year the RO ran three contests to encourage students to confirm their Fall 2024 offer over certain weekends in February, March and April for a chance to win a Humber hoodie prize pack or $200 Humber Bookstore gift card. Each contest had a different theme, starting with Family Day and moving to Spring into your future and finishing with Gear Up for Fall. As a result, the number of confirmations went up, in some cases over 50 per cent compared to the same timeframe last year.
