Learning how to code can be challenging (Gomes & Mendes, 2007). Teaching code to students who are not interested in learning code can be even more challenging.
With this workshop, we will introduce participants to code by coding a Lego robot. These robots were used in a SoTL research project that we have conducted on a series of innovative pedagogical approaches, aimed at engaging students who are not interested in the course topic. Based on the idea that millennials prefer authentic problem-solving and projects based on real-life experiences (Oblinger, 2003), we have been integrating a series of tangible aids — board games, IOT devices, Raspberry Pis, and Lego Mindstorms EV3 — to help ease students into the idea of learning code.
- Participants will be introduced to code and have the opportunity to learn some basic code by coding a small Lego robot. The workshop will be aimed at inspiring other faculty to increase student engagement by integrating tangible aids and new pedagogies into their own classrooms.
