CTL: Teaching Effectiveness Certificate

In-class: Saturdays (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) or online

The Teaching Effectiveness Certificate is designed for those interested in the field of teaching or private sector training. The courses within this certificate program provide participants with an opportunity to explore best practices in teaching and learning and to apply the skills learned in a safe environment with other classmates. The certificate is comprised of five individual courses that are designed to develop essential teaching competencies. the courses are delivered over twelve Saturdays (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) or are available online. Upon successful completion of the five courses, participants receive a Certificate of Completion.

This Certificate has been accredited by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) - Educational Developers Caucus (EDC) of Canada to ensure quality in teaching and learning. For more information, please visit EDC Accreditation information

This Certificate has received the Learning Teaching and Assessing accreditation award by the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) of the United Kingdom to ensure quality and alignment in teaching and learning values and philosophies. DEV.101: Creating a Positive
Learning Environment
Creating a positive learning environment is the cornerstone of effective teaching. This course examines effective teaching and learning practices and explores strategies to engage adult learners in a variety of diverse educational settings. The participants will explore strategies for the promotion and maintenance of positive physical, instructional, and psychological climates for learning. DEV.102: Learning Technology The purpose of this course is to explore how various forms of technology can be used to create an effective learning environment. Participants will be able to explain a rationale for choosing specific types of technology in the design of a course or training session. DEV. 103: Preparing for Instruction Preparing for instruction examines the importance of preparation and planning in a teaching and learning environment. This course introduces participants to the benefits of structured lesson plan design that reflects various domains and levels of learning. Participants will design a lesson plan that includes activating, acquiring, applying and assessing knowledge that aligns with course outcomes and learning objectives. DEV.104: Evaluation Techniques Evaluation Techniques explores the various elements in designing and evaluating student assessments that align with course and learning outcomes. Participants will explore the rationale for selecting specific formal and informal strategies of assessment for/as/of learning. Techniques for giving effective feedback, and creating authentic and differentiated assessments will be examined. Participants will design an assessment and a corresponding rubric to assess learning. DEV.105: Delivering Instruction Delivering Instruction represents the culmination of the knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired throughout the Teaching Effectiveness Certificate. Active learning strategies and the differentiated instruction approach will be practiced experientially to assist participants in improving their teaching practice. Participants will deliver two mini lessons to their peers and have the opportunity to give and receive constructive feedback in a safe and positive learning environment.
