President's Lecture Series: Jesse Wente

Reconciling Representation: Indigenous People in Popular Culture

In an age of reconciliation, it’s important to understand how representation shapes points of view and actions so that we can avoid the problems caused by cultural appropriation. In this lecture, Jesse Wente will show how the history of Indigenous representation in popular culture, such as cinema and sports mascots, has been largely skewed by political/colonial ideology that continues to harm Indigenous people today. Mr. Wente will also discuss the recent Truth and Reconciliation Commission and explore how individuals can respond to its calls to action.
