Instructors, staff and students, Academic Services invites you to attend our Winter 2020 Feature Lecture event, featuring Mexican-Canadian award-winning writer and Professor Martha Batiz who teaches Spanish Language & Culture at the University of Guelph-Humber.

Please join us on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 for Professor Batiz’s lecture, An Author’s Journey: Exploring the Political Violence of Latin America. In this lecture, Professor Bátiz will explore how her doctoral research around political violence in Latin America has influenced her writing. After traveling to Argentina and Chile for her doctoral research on political theatre, she was overwhelmed by the number of people who disappeared under the dictatorial regimes. The rise of the organized crime, the violence of the drug cartels in her native Mexico, the plight of Mexican and Central American migrants, and the violence exerted by Latin American governments against their own citizens are at the centre of her narrative. Reminiscent of Joyce Carol Oates, Shirley Jackson, and the Cuban author Leonardo Padura, Bátiz explores, with an honest and direct language, the complex layers of human condition in today’s troubled times.

A light lunch will be served. Registration is very limited.

RSVP here by February 25, 2020.
