Students build on the fundamentals of graphic design theory and the basic print and online production techniques learned in the Innovative Design course. This course focuses on developing a strong foundation in design, craft, composition, typography and conceptual development for media production. Formal practices and technical skills in design increase the understanding of the roles of typography in contemporary culture and contemporary media. Students learn typography and page composition, including grid layout, bleed and the principles of contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. The course provides the opportunity to explore and understand the relationship between design and client requirements for publication. By researching, analyzing, critiquing and evaluating creative ideas, students gain an understanding of current practices in design, marketing communication and publication. Students apply this learning to an independent or group production project.
