Renovation, Restoration and Reuse

Course Code: ARC 258

Academic Year: 2024-2025

This studio examines adaptive re-use, renovation and restoration of an existing heritage residential row house. City zoning, Ontario Building Code (part 11), heritage by-laws, conserving embodied energy and coordinating with design consultants, and their effect on the design and construction process will addressed. Through design and construction drawings, guided critique and analysis, students will develop ideas and produce a project that enables them to identify net-zero carbon use strategies, and understand the influences that shape the design response to an existing site condition. Students will engage in collaborative activities involving research on the site, building history, building systems and embodied energy to develop a conceptual design presentation for a multi-storey, multi-use program, transforming the existing building through addition, alteration, and reuse.
