Course Code: BCPW 3502
Academic Year: 2025-2026
In this course, students will explore the leadership role the artist can play in community building and social change, and they will be encouraged to reflect upon how the writer can meaningfully engage in public service as an artist-educator-advocate. In partnership with not-for-profit organizations, this course will combine community-based learning and classroom instruction. Students will discuss readings on service learning and community engagement in the arts, and they will also begin to develop practices in relation to teaching methodologies and approaches. Students will plan and create their own micro-lesson plans, lead in-class writing exercises for the group, and will be introduced to learning styles, group facilitation and management skills. Learning will include visits from artist-educators who currently work in the field.
