Course Code: BDES 4500
Academic Year: 2025-2026
This course is the second of two major capstone courses in which students apply design thinking to solve problems, using the skills gained over the first three years of the program in human-centered design research, collaborative insight generation, and design process. Students plan, research and execute a major thesis paper and project which will serve as the centerpiece of their design portfolio. In the earlier capstone project, students identify a problem, research the context, and propose an innovative or unique solution to this challenge. In this course, Capstone Implementation, students apply their sketching, prototyping and design skills to build out a working prototype, product, service or system based on that concept. Students are expected to produce several iterations of the project based on user testing, peer feedback, and recommendations from Humber faculty and mentors. Their resulting products are showcased in a revised proposal thesis paper, and the final paper and project are showcased in a design exhibition for interested professionals and the public at the end of the semester. This comprehensive advanced course enables students to showcase their interests and learning through choosing a meaningful topic, conducting in-depth research, project management, application of design skills and process, and demonstrating professional capacity.
