Structural Design

Course Code: BENG 4015

Academic Year: 2024-2025

In this course, students will gain the expertise and understanding necessary for designing steel, concrete, and wood structures according to Canadian design codes. Various types of structures, loads, and load transfer mechanisms will be explored. Students will investigate the fundamentals of steel structure design, covering tension members, compression members, beams, framing concepts, and connections. Additionally, the course will introduce limit state design principles and address loads stemming from use and occupancy, snow, wind, and earthquake forces. Furthermore, the properties of concrete and reinforcing steel will be examined, alongside the characteristics of reinforced concrete beams, slabs, and various timber members including rectangular, T, and L beams.
