Do the cultural industries manipulate users of mass and social media? How? Why? This course critically examines the political economy of communication to understand what forces are at play, who stands to benefit, and who stands to suffer. This course similarly asks if so-called 'smart' technologies and the internet combine to provide meaningful opportunities for citizens to evade manipulation or if such technologies serve to amplify and entrench existing unequal power relations.
