Course Code: BFMP 3500
Academic Year: 2025-2026
This course explores nonfiction film and media practice. Students gain competency in the pre-production, production and post-production of nonfiction film and media through the creation of original work. Collaborating in small groups, students hone their research, writing, storytelling, and administrative skills in the final conceptualization and pre-production of their projects. During the production phase, proficiency in producing, directing, image and sound capture are emphasized. Given the unpredictability of nonfiction work, editing and postproduction offer significant challenges to the student filmmaker. Group critique forms an important component of the course, and allows students to practice critical thinking and excellent communication in giving and receiving critique. Students consult regularly with faculty, and cultivate their interpersonal, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills. An on-going discussion of major theoretical and production issues in nonfiction media supports the production process. The course culminates in a public exhibition, organized by students, which allows the student filmmaker to gauge audience response to their intended message and reflect on their work.
