Course Code: BMED 4500
Academic Year: 2025-2026
This course explores the theory and application of the theory and application of computational techniques utilized in bioinformatics. Emphasis is placed on biological sequence (DNA, RNA, protein) analysis and applications. Students learn to explore existing bioinformatics resources, software programs, and databases to access the publicly available data to answer research questions. This will involve searching and retrieving information from genomic and proteomic databases, analyzing data using commonly used and available software and comparing, analyzing, and interpreting biological sequences. Learners will also explore the utility of key bioinformatic techniques such as; constructing phylogenetic trees based on biological sequence data; locating consensus sequences, genes and open reading frames within biological sequences; the application of microarrays; performing elementary predictions of protein structure and function; and performing comparative genomic analysis.
