Carpentry Practices 1 will take the concepts studied in Health and Safety, Formwork and Concrete Structures and Floor systems to the lab to apply the practical aspects of designs studied in the classroom. Floor systems takes a look at residential framed construction beyond the foundation including columns, wood and steel beams, joist and the methods and materials around the considerations for meeting building code requirements for spans and bearing requirements. Uses of different beam types and joist types will reveal the uses of steel and laminated veneer lumbers and engineered joists and their capacities. This practical lab course also includes a welding basics that will take place in the welding lab including oxy-acetylene and rigging basic.
