This course introduces students to both the theory and applied aspects of the ways in which local realities and contexts inform the practice of community development. The course will examine issues including poverty, housing and homelessness, mental health, poverty and anti-poverty dynamics, the role and impact of education, and the ways in which these impact on the everyday lived realities of local communities. Students will also explore the ways in which changing conceptions of community also inform and influence ones' understanding and practices in local communities as well as the options for engaging in advocacy and leadership within.
