Social Movements and Contemporary Issues

This course will examine how social movements address contemporary issues that require everyday people and communities to work together to resist and oppose systems of power and oppression. Social movements that have impacted societal norms, laws and business practices will be explored. Students will gain an understanding of how messaging and mobilization impact participation on contemporary issues and understand what contributes to the rise, success and decline of social movements. Local realities and contexts will guide students in exploring current topics to advance students activism and knowledge of important areas for locality development and social action.
