Critical thinking and clear, compassionate communication are vital to social service work, playing a crucial role in advocacy, problem-solving, and meaningful intervention in communities. In this course, students will develop independent research, critical reading, and effective writing skills that can be adapted to support a variety of purposes, audiences, and contexts. Students will develop inquiry-based research skills, from formulating good research questions to locating, analyzing and evaluating scholarly and popular sources. They will practise paraphrase, summary and synthesis to produce a variety of researched texts, culminating in an original research report. Throughout the course, students will practise the stages of the writing process to produce polished and coherent documents.
