This course is an introduction to the historical and contemporary realities of Indigenous People in Canada. Students will understand and analyze the effects of systemic oppression, anti-Indigenous racism and intergenerational trauma in relation to Indigenous communities in Canada. This course provides students with an opportunity to explore the richness and diversity of Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples, with a special emphasis on working with children, youth and their families. In order to enhance effectiveness in working with Indigenous children, youth and families, learners are encouraged to immerse themselves in Indigenous knowledge, events and teachings inside and outside of the course. Attempting to approach the material with an openness to Indigenous worldviews and perspectives will increase the value of the course for each learner.
