This course examines the past, present and immediate future of policing in Canada. It will introduce the student to the institution of policing, its structure, processes, and performance in achieving mandated responsibilities and meeting public expectations. Students will become familiarized with service delivery models, Indigenous policing, discretion, organization, and training, police interaction with the public and Canada's criminal justice system and its agents. Throughout students are encouraged to utilize academic research to explore issues that confront Canadian public policing such as: individuals and institutionalized misconduct, exceeded force controversies, the effectiveness of civilian oversight, differential policing, racial bias, civil unrest, recruiting demands, and the complications faced in a post 9/11 world.
