Investigating Conspiracies: Navigating the New Information Landscape

Was 9/11 an inside job? Are there really aliens in Area 51? Does the Illuminati rule the world? This course explores the intriguing world of conspiracy theories. The focus is on developing critical thinking strategies in order to distinguish between real and fake conspiracies. Specifically, logic, argumentative analysis, and critical reasoning as well as sociological and historical theories are employed in order to uncover the truth about what is really happening in the world. Through the use of philosophy, claims made by conspiracy theorists and sceptics are examined in order to consistently get the right answers to difficult questions. These critical thinking skills are useful beyond the classroom and will help improve decision-making in students' personal and professional lives.
