Stop the presses! The Canadian and American racial "presentation of self" in the media often depicts societies that are multiracial yet assimilated, relatively color-blind, and where everyone has equal opportunity. In reality, the contrast with that ideal can be stark and overwhelming. Is the notion of a "color-blind society" whether its in Canada, the United States, or any other country in the world - an honest misrepresentation of the extent to which race and ethnicity continue to shape not only the lives of racial and ethnic minorities, but also the opportunities available to them? Have we truly "moved beyond race"? If so, how would we explain the existence of "generational social exclusion" and "entrenched disadvantage" for various ethnic groups? Is the notion of a "post-racial" society simply a fantasy? At the end of the day, arent we all just human? Why cant we be evaluated based on our individual selves? These are some of the questions we will address in this course.
