Course Code: CULT 2400
Academic Year: 2026-2027
We live in an era where music is more accessible and listened to than ever before, a direct result of the connection between music and technology. This course explores the dynamic interplay between technology and music, from the physical constraints of 45 records shaping the length of pop songs, to Napsters disruption of the music industry through online file sharing, to contemporary concerns of AI replacing musicians. The course follows the history of this relationship, highlighting key technologies that have influenced music and how music, in turn, has driven technological shifts. Students will critically explore how technology can both empower underrepresented voices and reinforce existing power structures through historical and contemporary case studies. By engaging with diverse perspectives, they will gain insight into how music and technology intersect with identity, power, and creative expression from the advent of recorded sound to the present and beyond. Content Warning: This course examines the relationship between technology and music, which includes historical examples that may reflect the cultural attitudes of their time.
