Course Code: CULT 3002
Academic Year: 2025-2026
This course introduces students to Hip-Hop Studies, a multidisciplinary approach that examines how Hip-Hop music and culture have transformed how we think of the world. Using an international and interdisciplinary perspective, students learn how Hip-Hop music and culture help us to communicate, empower, and apply intersectional approaches, such as Black queer studies, to our world. Throughout the course, students engage with quantitative and qualitative research, interrogating how Hip-Hop music and culture have transformed attitudes towards mental health, youth empowerment, inter-generational communication, sports, stereotypes, food, and 2SLGBTQ+ identities. Content Warning: some of the material in this course may contain discussions of racism, sexism, transphobia, non-binary and gender diverse discrimination, homophobia, heterosexism, pornography, suicide, and violence.
