Course Code: CULT 3500
Academic Year: 2025-2026
How readily may global citizens access the promise of the digital age? What are the costs of, and barriers to, access and participation in this age? This course features research related to the unequal social, economic, political, linguistic, and geographic levels of access to the internet and other modes of digital communication in Canada and around the world. Commencing with the study of Canada's own digital divide(s), the course also examines research related to the digital divide(s) in the Global South, BRICS, Europe, Australia, and the United States. Students evaluate and compare access challenges experienced by global citizens navigating the shift from one-way, passive, analogue media to two-way, active, digital modes of media production and communication.
