This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and purposes of group work in child and youth care practice. The course focuses on introducing students to concepts of power, privilege and oppression, leadership and group member skills necessary for effective group work, both with children and youth and within staff teams. Through experiential learning, students will have the opportunity to develop and practise skills in areas of leadership style, communication, group roles, group cohesion, motivation, creativity, active ally-ship, accountability, relationship building and trust. Students learn fundamentals of planning, designing, implementing and evaluating groups while paying particular attention to issues related to diversity, environmental conditions and group development stages.
