Field Experience & Integrative Seminar 1 (Accelerated)

Course Code: CYC 151

Academic Year: 2025-2026

As part of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), students will have the opportunity to complete three field experiences. CYC students will work from a developmental and ecological perspective, to assess and respond to the strength and diverse social, emotional and behavioral needs of children, youth and families, and to maintain an anti-oppression and anti-racism perspective in their work. Students will plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based and strength-based interventions in the areas of therapeutic milieu and programming, teamwork and advocacy. This first field experience is 2 days a week for a total of 294 hours and will focus on the development of introductory clinical, personal and organizational skills, wherein students will be supported to fully and successfully engage in their field experience as active, self-aware, developing Child and Youth Care Practitioners. The student experience is supported and guided by an experienced Child and Youth Care Practitioner, through the course, Integrated Seminar. Seminar discussion and leadership from the Seminar Instructor provides students with the opportunity to integrate theoretical course material with their own development as individuals and as Child and Youth Care Practitioners. Through group collaboration, guided discussions and review, evaluation and self-reflection, students will use their current field experience as a focus for developing and demonstrating the skills necessary to engage in self-reflective practice and group supervision to ensure best practices in the field of Child and Youth Care. Students will meet weekly with their Integrative Seminar class over the course of the semester.
