Preparing for Professional Practice

This course will introduce students to concepts related to professional practice, including the professional, personal, and inter-personal skills that are necessary in the field of Child and Youth Care (CYC). Topics include ethical and professional practice, the professional identify of child and youth care practitioners, legislation of the Child and Youth Care profession in Ontario, the development of self-awareness and reflective practice, the constructive use of clinical supervision, as well as preparation for interviews and Field Practicum experiences. The course will also prepare students for Humber BCYC Field Projects beginning in semester three, and the Summer Internship which occurs between semesters six and seven. Students will be supported in obtaining the documentation necessary prior to entering the field, and in meeting all of the requirements to participate in field practice. Integrating knowledge and learning from other courses, students will have a comprehensive understanding of their role in various community programs and agencies, after school programs, street-involved youth support networks, and other field experiences.
