Utilizing the emerging construct of 'cultural humility', this course critically explores the role of culture and context in local and international CYC practice. In exposing students to diverse perspectives and experiences of child and youth practitioners around the world, the course will provide opportunity to critically and reflexively engage with some of the most complex, challenging and exciting questions continually reshaping our field. Topics will include: approaches to sexuality and gender-based violence; culturally-informed educational perspectives and controversies around ethnocentric approaches to schooling and learning; perspectives on the 'radicalization' of disillusioned youth; resourceful approaches to trauma and mental health in contexts of instability and displacement; and innovations in culturally relevant approaches to arts, activism and transformative youth engagement.
