The purpose of this course is to provide students with information and skills which will increase their effectiveness in supporting people with a dual diagnosis (a developmental disability and a mental health concern). The course will review why people with developmental disabilities are vulnerable to mental illnesses and diagnostic complexities. The course will also introduce students to diverse intervention modalities, how to provide comprehensive supports and how to prepare comprehensive information for mental health consultations. There will also be a focus on how the mental health service system operates and the systemic issues which are barriers to accessing services for people with a dual diagnosis.
