This course focuses on the development and maintenance of professional helping relationships while assisting individuals with developmental disabilities across a range of functioning levels to problem solve and cope with life events. Students will learn about providing support to children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities using a variety of evidence-based approaches and interventions. The use of augmentative communication methods will be explored in the context of facilitating emotional and problem-solving communication. Content related to providing support to individuals with developmental disabilities experiencing anxiety, anger, grief, and trauma will also be covered. Interactive lab sessions and peer feedback will be utilized to develop and practice the skills covered in the course content.
