This course introduces students to tax planning which is broadly defined as optimal personal and business financial decision-making in the presence of taxes. The content will be a blend of personal taxation and corporate taxation. The course will draw on basic tax planning principles, methods of tax research and problem solving, and tools and theories relevant for tax planning. In addition, it will examine how and the ways taxation works, including the different tax systems, i.e. progressive, regressive, flat, consumption, etc. and their ultimate effects. The role of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will be explored with regards to their responsibilities, audits, etc. Also, different tax planning strategies will be considered, including income splitting. The focus of this course is applying the tax principles to tax planning.
