Advanced Directing

Course Code: FMPS 3800

Academic Year: 2025-2026

This course continues the work of the introductory Directing Drama course, deepening students' understanding and skills in the art of directing. The practical applications in this course place the students' work in theoretical context through lecture presentations and seminars. Students expand their critical and analytical faculties as the course addresses more complex elements of directing, focusing on narrative, visual language, and performance. Students' skills are further developed via analyzing dramatic, narrative, and action scenes, particularly in the field of character development, dramatic analysis, staging, use of camera as narrator, directing dialogues, and use of tropes. Students enhance their skills by applying their creative voice, managing the crew, and collaborating and working with actors, including casting, rehearsing, and directing on the set. At the end of the semester, each student produces and directs a short dramatic film (video), overseeing all creative elements of production, and integrating them into one cohesive, dramatically and visually appealing story.
