Course Code: FMPS 3802

Academic Year: 2025-2026

Cinematography is a creative and technical cornerstone of the filmmaking process, working in tandem with writing, directing, and editing. This courseprovides a focused, critical exploration of the artistic and technical elements of cinematography. Students study the work of influential cinematographers, analyzing visual theory and applying key concepts to their projects. The course covers both fiction and documentary styles, with an emphasis on the balance between naturalistic and stylized approaches to image-making. Students explore the collaborative dynamics between the cinematographer, director, and production designer, and learn the roles and responsibilities of each member of the camera department. Theoretical and historical perspectives are paired with hands-on workshops in digital workflow, image control, camera and lens systems, and studio and location production techniques. As a culminating project, students collaborate with directors and editors from other advanced Core Skills Electives courses to produce a short dramatic film.
