Students develop mathematical aptitude for addressing real-life problems faced by fire service professionals. They build upon basic skills in arithmetic, measurement, simple equations and geometry necessary for making quick calculations while in the field as fire fighter, fire educator or fire prevention inspector. Students apply mathematical knowledge and skills to also explore physics topics relevant for firefighting such as motion, simple machines, gears and pump hydraulics. They also learn some basic statistics concepts and the importance of data as a critical asset of modern fire departments for assessing and planning programs.
