This interdisciplinary course enhances understanding of some of the core social, cultural, economic, and political issues in contemporary Canadian society. Through a consideration of Canadian history students will be introduced to significant issues, people, and events often overlooked in traditional history courses. The course covers a range of topics including: a comparison of Indigenous and settler perspectives on Canadian history, political influences and the democratic system, key economic industries and labour relations, identity and rights, and Canadian popular culture. Students will consider contemporary challenges facing Canada such as the Truth and Reconciliation process with Indigenous peoples, immigration, and the treatment of the natural environment. The course will utilize lectures, group discussions, written assignments, and activities to help students better understand the influence of history on the present and the ways that we can learn from history to create a better future.
