This course introduces students to important themes in literature. By reading a diverse selection of texts, students develop an understanding of the ways literature represents and defines self, experience, relationships, and the world. The works that resonate most are those that engage and challenge readers, requiring them to respond and make connections between texts and themselves. This course provides students with foundations for life-long reading and learning by providing the tools and criteria for understanding and appreciating literary work. Through analysis of a variety of creative readings, classic and contemporary, students will experience the diversity of spirit embodied in various literary texts.
