This course introduces students to major themes, approaches, issues, theoretical perspectives and debates in the field of sociology. Through engaging lectures, interactive small group activities and exercises, audio-visual supports and self-directed research assignments, students analyze a range of topics, including deviance, social and economic stratification, culture, socialization, race and racialization, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation. These topics are explored in a current and Canadian context and in a manner that is relevant to the students' lives. This course is only for students in the General Arts & Science program.
