This course will teach students how to appreciate 21st century art. By examining various art forms, such as painting, popular song, literature and film, students will become more acquainted with what selected artists have valued, an inquiry that can help students understand their own values. By the end of this course, students will have a deeper understanding of various art forms, greater confidence and ability to criticize and analyze works of art and familiarity with themes common among 21st century works of art, especially that of "longing for paradise."Two field trips will be included in the course. These vary each semester and consist of visits either to the Art Gallery of Ontario, a theatre, a movie theatre, the ballet or the opera. The course will also feature classroom visits by distinguished Canadian writers.
