This course familiarizes students with a broad range of the most important beliefs, practices, and issues of debate related to the religion of Islam. It addresses the need for a critical engagement and study of Islam in today's world. Students learn about the Prophet Muhammad, the Qur'an, the split between Shi'ism and Sunnism, the Caliphate, concepts such as jihad and hijab, as well as other prominent topics. Students develop the intellectual tools needed to recognize, understand, and engage the different expressions of Islam that they will encounter in the future, both in their local communities and in world events, as well as popular misconceptions about the religion.
