Focusing on our experiences of passion, acquisitiveness, success, and their attendant emotions of happiness, despair, guilt, hope, shame, regret and anger, this course examines the role which desire and discontent play in motivating human behaviour and shaping personality. In so doing, students undertake a critical reading of texts in philosophy and psychoanalysis, including in their analysis thinkers such as Plato, Epicurus, Augustine, and Freud. This interdisciplinary course examines the insights of philosophy and psychoanalysis in the attempt to understand the human cycle of desire and discontent.
