Indigenous Experience: History, Culture and Resistance

Course Code: INDG 100

Academic Year: 2024-2025

Indigenous Experience: history, culture, and resistance takes Learners on an educational journey through Canadian history shared from the perspective of the original people of Turtle Island. This course focuses on the experience of the Indigenous Nations in the region surrounding Humber College, and allows Learners the opportunity to be exposed to aspects of Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee traditions through storytelling, experiential exercise, and land-based activity. Through engagement with Indigenous teaching methods, Learners will enhance their awareness of broader Indigenous worldviews, and the significance of Indigenous cultural traditions, while critically analysing the impact of colonial practices and government policy upon local Indigenous communities. Comparing the most significant issues impacting Indigenous communities, against a backdrop of false narratives, will be a core exercise within the course. Ultimately, Learners will apply their understanding in the development of a collaborative final project directed toward making meaningful change.
