Crime and Court Journalism

Students are introduced to the crime and court reporting in Canada. Through readings, viewings, and discussion, they explore the historical development of crime and court reportage and its modern iterations through all digital media platforms, as well as traditional print and broadcast media. Students further develop their foundational knowledge of ethics, the Canadian legal system, humanitarian awareness, and the journalistic responsibilities of covering stories with oftentimes tragic implications for all participants. The balance of subjectivity, objectivity, and fairness in reporting is explored as are the impacts of implicit bias. There will be discussion and exploration of post-traumatic stress disorders on journalists.
