Advanced Radio News

Course Code: JRNL 520

Academic Year: 2024-2025

There are three components to this course: weekly news shifts on the Humber College radio station, 96.9FM; a daily one-hour current affairs magazine show and best of podcast; and classroom discussions and assignments. Students sharpen production and editing skills by using audio feeds from BN and by working on the daily magazine show under intense deadline pressure. Additionally, they develop on-air presentation skills by reading five-minute news packages live on-air, producing news reports and feature items, reporting live and hosting the live one-hour show each day. Students are required to participate in daily editorial meetings to determine the content of the show and in in-class discussions of major news events of the day and their coverage in local and national broadcast outlets. They learn to listen critically to their own work and that of their peers and learn to critique the work in a positive and constructive manner. Students may also produce a demo by the end of the semester to showcase their work.
