Exploring Modern Jazz Concepts in Improvisation

This Course is designed for the serious, already evolving performer. Emphasis will be on a logical approach to improvising as well as on individualism, repertoire and style. The course will involve an introduction to rhythmic modulation for the first few classes studying different approaches to develop an understanding of metric modulation and how to use it and then a serious look into the music of John Coltrane and the Chord substitution theory he invented. Each class will be divided into a lecture and performance component. The lecture will be comprised of approximately the first hour of class time, with the performance session immediately following a short break.
