Course Code: MEL 3073
Academic Year: 2023-2024
In this course, students learn the skills and techniques necessary to arrange and orchestrate for ensembles consisting of a mixed section of reeds and brass comprising up to five instruments and a rhythm section. As in MEL 3072, of which this is a continuation, the focus is on writing using techniques grounded in the tonal-functional harmonic practice of mainstream jazz. The ways in which these essential foundational techniques continue to inform current practice are also examined. Students learn a variety of 4- and 5- part horn voicing techniques which they utilize in practical settings. The course culminates in a final assignment comprising a full arrangement for 9-piece band with optional vocal feature in which students deploy the various techniques learned in MEL 3072 and MEL 3073.
