This course is a continuation of the study of the jazz orchestra begun in MEL 4072. Students interested in contemporary music composition for large ensemble learn to work with advanced theoretical and practical concepts, and apply these to the creation of their own arrangements. Through analyzing and emulating significant historical models, students will further gain proficiency in formal organization in, and different approaches to, writing complete works for jazz orchestra and other large ensembles.
